Dear colleagues,
Looking back, we cannot help but be impressed by the significant evolution of dentistry over time. The extraordinary progress of dentistry reflects not only technical advances but also a deep understanding of the link between oral health and overall health. Today, dentistry is no longer merely an adjunct to medicine. It is a rigorous science, but one that can be transformed into art.
Every patient who walks through our door is unique. The perfect smile is not universal, which makes it even more special. The dentist personalises the process for each patient and considers symmetry, shapes, and shades, just as an artist shapes his or her work.

For three days, we will host an exclusive program featuring presentations by internationally renowned dentistry experts.
At the same time, we live in a technologically advanced, digitised world that is evolving rapidly. In this new reality, we, as dentists, have a duty not to allow the medical profession to undergo negative changes. Despite the avalanche of changes, the medical profession must remain authentic. Above all, we MUST BE CAREFUL not to diminish or lose human contact. In this sense, the dental community plays an ESSENTIAL ROLE in protecting its TRADITIONAL VALUES – ethics, transparency, honesty, competence, and, last but not least, care for the patient. Regardless of the context, these values must remain the cornerstone of our work.
The benefits of technology in dentistry are undeniable. However, it is important to note that there are also risks that can affect the doctor-patient relationship. One such risk is the depersonalization of medical care, which is a real concern. Excessive bureaucracy, a large number of procedures or protocols, time pressure, and a high volume of patients can cause us to lose direct interaction with patients.
This worrying trend should not become the norm. Patients are not just medical files. First and foremost, patients have complex emotions that often manifest as fear, worry, or anxiety in our office. A lack of eye contact, clear explanations, and empathy can make patients feel unseen and unheard.
Dear colleagues, LET US NOT FALL INTO THIS TRAP: Let us not stray from our purpose and let technological progress take precedence. Let us always strive to find a balance between efficiency and empathy. Always strive to find a balance between efficiency and empathy.
Patients in Romania face even greater challenges. Statistics show that only 20% of Romanians get routine dental checkups at least once a year. Why? Financial resources for dental services are limited. In the absence of significant reimbursements, which should be included in the insurance package, patients end up at the dentist’s office when the condition already requires complex treatment.
I support the CMSR’s goal of increasing state funding for dental prevention services in Romania. Prevention is not a luxury. These services must be accessible to patients on time.
Let’s return to TRADITIONAL VALUES in dentistry. Dentists’ knowledge is constantly being refined. Continuing education provides us with the best solutions for treating patients. At the same time, we are living in a spectacular period of technological progress affecting all areas of medicine. As dentists, we will have to TAKE A NEW ROLE: finding balance.
Doctors don’t just work with data; they also consider patients’ feelings and needs. No technology will ever be able to do that because it lacks a human touch. Technology will certainly become an indispensable ally in dentistry, but LET US NOT FORGET that only the doctor decides how and when to use it. The final decision remains in our hands.
Patients in Romania face two major challenges: a lack of information about oral health and an inability to filter the large volume of information disseminated through social media apps and advertising. In this situation, the dental community can step in.
We should invest in our relationship with patients. Let’s offer them trust and support. To do so, we must eliminate all forms of misleading advertising.
Finally, I would like to look to the future with hope and pragmatism. We are part of a generation that must keep pace with technology and digitalisation. We will witness fundamental changes in dentistry. Highly personalised, precise, and invasive treatments will become the new reality, but we should expect these treatments to be costly.
This is why it is important to continue the dialogue with authorities to increase investment in the Romanian healthcare system and create a functional infrastructure that provides equitable access to prevention and innovative dental treatments for Romanian patients.
We are currently experiencing a period of transition. By maintaining traditional values and commitment, the role of the dentist will remain essential in an increasingly technological future. Our expertise, clinical judgment, and direct patient relationships will remain irreplaceable and be supported by technological advances.
Thank you for your attention. I look forward to seeing you from October 2 to 4, 2025, for a productive and inspiring congress!
Sincerely,
Prof. Horia Barbu, Ph.D.
